Comment | Zhang Zikang Speaks About Shared Environmen

The creative work of artist Xiaowu Gao transcends the physical limitations of materials and space-time by establishing transcendent interplays between work and space, space and time, and work and audience. Through the medium of contemporary art and using materials lacking in distinct form but full of dynamism, the artist conveys to the viewer a myriad of forms represented not directly but figuratively. Their message seems to be the impermanence inherent in the great harmony of things we meet in this world. Reminiscent of the changing states in Buddhist cosmology, there is no self yet there is a unique myriad of things within the mind of each individual. The artist transcends fixed definitive concepts, allowing his own philosophy to enter into the work, and revealing tensions which convey a kind of meditative profundity. A deep calmness rooted in Buddhist thought invites the viewer to engage in the beautiful experience of the mind of the other.
